Overview
What do you do when the store has a great wine on a great vintage close-out deal? You pick up as many bottles as you can. Saint Cosme is one of the oldest continuously maintained estates in the Southern Rhone, and arguably the oldest and most famous in Gigondas. The Barruol family has worked this estate and made wine here since the 1490s, and Louis Barruol, the current proprietor and head of the family who took over in 1992, is at the head of the operation today. Their Cotes du Rhone comes from their “Chateau de Saint Cosme” estate, which was made to showcase their wines outside of Gigondas.
If you love the traditional, old-world Rhone wines as much as me, Saint Cosme’s Cotes du Rhone is one of the best values out there. This 100% Syrah Cotes du Rhone will make you feel nostalgic for a time and place you have never been (if you have been to the Rhone Valley or Saint Cosme’s estates, then you may know what I mean here).
Nose & Tongue
This bottle starts out tight and tannic, but as with many old-world Syrah, time and air bring the juice to life. The nose is driven by herbal and earthy aromas upfront, though fruit aromas poke through eventually. On the tongue, though, we get those same herbal and earthy notes, but blackberry and cherry balance out the earthy funk.
For an everyday, every occasion bottle, this is an excellent choice if you’re set on red wine. Saint Cosme’s Cotes du Rhone is bound to please and appeal to both casual drinkers and those who pretend to be experts. Partly joking, of course, this bottle is versatile in food pairing options, different settings, and different people.
